The center won an honor award from the Portland chapter of the American Institute of Architects, as well as an education merit award from the Oregon chapter of the International Interior Design Association. Arad's 9/11 Memorial: Guaranteed to Bring You Down
A few years ago in Seattle, the city sponsored a design competition for a homeless persons' memorial. Many entrants tried and fell short, with statues and abstract concepts that didn't convey dignity. The winning entry, "Footprints" by Callison Architecture, though highly abstract, was a simple and profound solution: a cement courtyard with the footprints of the homeless embedded in the cement.
